Self defence training is weapon training

When you incorporate self defence in your martial arts training, make sure there are various weapons involved. As in the photo above you choose natural weapons (knife, stick, rope) and unnatural weapons, as door keys, a bottle and so on. Ichinen Bridport offers more than 50 different weapon skills . Don't miss out here.

We train on real martial arts mats

Ichinen Bridport martial arts school in Bridport / South West Dorset, uses thick rubber mats for the self defence classes. As the training requires a lot of ground work, either for the rolls and falls, the warm up procedure or grappling. These thick mats make sure, that whatever you do keeps you secure and comfortable to learn these new skills.

Without these mats it would be impossible to learn the special Jiu-Jitsu throws and more than half of the training time during the children lessons, the kids are working on the ground. Comfortable supported by our mats. And keep on mind: martial arts training on hard floor can damage your ankles on a long run.

Even the radical self defence of Anti Terror Combat requires these mats. Although the advanced students and the masters conduct many of their skill on hard floor, the beginner needs the support of some mats and many techniques are impossible to teach without so.

Jiu-Jitsu self defence training - Self falling skills

In this short clip you watch Lewis Harris doing a self falling technique on Trevor Barton. This throw is relatively easy to learn and can be excellent used against taller attackers.

Martial arts day

That was a busy martial art day. First Master Horst Lindenau went with Damian Burton to Weymouth to meet the Sunday Fight Club. What a great experience!

We drove the coast road in best Sunday sunshine up to Weymouth where I attended this venue first time. On arrival we met the others. All black belts as the Sunday Fight Club is reserved for the master training. Neill, Tom and CJ, all three are Taekwondo black belts, same as Damian.

In a friendly and professional atmosphere to train with these martial artists was just a pleasure. We had a little individual warm up. Of cause. Followed by patch kicking. Sure a Taekwondo black belt proves the advantage of their kick skills. Just great!

After that the four had a good sparring session, which I enjoyed to watch. It was very educational for me. Unfortunately Neill bent a finger. But we sorted that with some ice spray and he looked fine later. Hope you alright mate!

I had the chance to introduce them to various Jiu-Jitsu skills. Defence in head locks, we trained some of the most common attack and used Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Haha, and of cause I used some Anti Terror Combat techniques.

Nerve grips and especially to the throat and hair or neck was some kind of new for the Taekwondo black belt.

All together I like to say big thank you to my new martial arts friends and *****!

Fist or claw? What do you use?

During a fight it is very likely that one launches a fist punch. Although the fist is a very good human tool to be used in a fight, there is an alternative for use in a fight. I think of the claw. The claw is probably the oldest human weapon. Applied at the right moment, executed professional and used with brut force the claw becomes quick the latest human weapon. Highly recommended for the Jiu-Jitsu self defence by Anti Terror Combat Master Horst Lindenau (6th Dan red belt). He knows what he is talking about!

Good Jiu-Jitsu session last night at Ichinen Bridport

Last night we trained the fortress. It was inspired by Carl Cooper a former Krav Maga instructor and inventor of the Toxic fighting system. Carl run a class in Exeter and one of his students, Lewis Harris, joined the Bridport based self defense class at Ichinen Bridport with Master Horst Lindenau.

Horst:" Lewis is a great added value to our school and I appreciate his knowledge in real self defense." We all enjoyed a good session of martial Arts and learned a lot.

These are the 10 most common (street) attacks according to law enforcement

As we say, we here at Ichinen Bridport do not want to “invent the wheel new”; therefore the following listing of common attacks will be the first set we concentrate on.

This is based on information supplied by Law Enforcement.

We set up scenarios that mirror the top 10 street attacks. Students will learn and understand the dynamics of the situation as well as the techniques that can be used to deal with these nasty most common attacks.

1. One person pushes, hands to chest, which is normally followed by the pusher striking first, to the head.
2. A swinging punch to the head.
3. A front clothing grab, one handed, followed by punch to the head.
4. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a head butt.
5. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a knee to the groin.
6. A bottle, glass, or ashtray to the head.
7. A lashing kick to the groin or lower legs.
8. A broken bottle or glass jabbed to face.
9. A slash with knife, most commonly a 3 to 4" lock blade knife or kitchen utility knife.
10. A grappling style head lock.

"The philosophy of our Jiu-Jitsu is to keep the mind always open and to practice all sorts of systems in order to get the essence of it. Anyone who focuses only on one star is in danger of missing the entire universe."
Master Horst Lindenau 2013

This picture shows two fighter demonstrating the system "Atemi Combat". A radical and direct self defense technique. Atemi was taught in the  WCA (world Combat Association), where Master Horst Lindenau used to be a member for two years and was graduated as a second Dan in Atemi Combat.

It's for sure useful and good to become a 1. Dan in a specific system first, to have a solid base for further studies. But after that do not hesitate to learn as much as you can from other systems too.

A side kick is a side kick is a side kick...

Those who know me better, might think now he favours football. But in this case, when an Argentine footballer used a side kick to his fellow playmates, I must admit, football sometimes produces incredible martial art techniques. Just remember Eric Cantona.

And this is the pure kick in a dojo. The footballer used a version with a little jump.
